Poetry

Since we are doing stuff in English about poetry, I decided to write about it. I hate poetry. I don't understand why people write it most of the time. It is a lot of times creepy for some reason. I seem to be incapable of writing anything remotely poetic. Sometimes I even feel like people write a bunch of strange things down and call it a poem.

Reasons for writing poetry usually are not obvious to me. Like "The Fish", why the heck did she write about catching a fish? Does it have some deep meaning or does it show us something about her personality, because I don't have a clue. A lot of times, poems seem to be creepy or violent. An example would be that poem by Edgar Allen Poe where one guy kills another and hides him under the floor. Later when the police investigate, he thinks he can here the guy's heartbeat. I just don't understand poetry.

  1. Hey Brandon, I feel so much like this it was like reading my own blog. I have never read a poem that made me happy or that sounded cool. I really think that sometimes the "hidden meaning" isn't there. I think they just write a bunch of strange stuff and let other people think of some weird way to interpret it. Hopefully Dr. D can think of some way to make it fun.

  2. Yea Brandon, I understand. It is pretty hard to understand but sometimes it is easier. I hope it will get easier for us as we go about this unit.

  3. See my comment on your other post. "The Tell-Tale Heart" is a short story, not a poem. Pretty much everything by Poe is creepy, whether poetry or prose. Just like any form of writing, poems can be creepy or happy or sad or hopeful or pessimistic or obvious or subtle or anything else. Try to approach with an open mind.
